May Hackfest In Holland Concludes

Saturday, May 27th, we had a great turnout at “Butchs”http://www.butchs.net in downtown Holland. We had Ron Sweeney, Brian Barto, Zach Dennis, Josh Gephart, Dan Morrison, Brandon Keepers, John Hwang and Craig Demyanovich show up for the hackfest. We pulled together four tables at Butchs to make one gigantic table that we could all sit around.

The local culture in the group seems to be shifting. Everyone except for myself and John Hwang brought Mac notebooks, and then John tells me his is coming later this week. I feel like I am being assimilated into the Mac culture, but I will hold out as long as possible! Fight the power!!

There were dicussions on OO concepts, and how-to apply behavior to Domain Models, and how ActiveRecord models fit into that concept. Thanks to John for posting this link on the mailing list” about DHH giving a talk on this very topic. You can check it out here. Outside of the theory of Domain Models we came up with a gameplan for getting this ruby conference in August moving. If you’d like to volunteer or help in any way please let us know, join the mailing list!

Dan and Brandon who help make up the company Collective Idea gave us a preview of their upcoming online web application which will provide an awesome event-based scheduling and planning service for people, non-profit groups and companies alike. They are shooting for beta testing later this week. Stay tuned for more information on this as information becomes available.

I spend some time working on my ActiveRecord extensions which helps make more efficient use out of the database when dealing with large sets of data. Thanks to Brandon for helping me with the correct PostgreSQL statements in place. More information will be coming soon on these extensions.

That concludes the meeting, see you all on June 10th at the next grandrapids.rb meeting! Directions can be found here.
